Hello Cool World
Director/Founder

Katherine Dodds (AKA “Kat”) got her start in advertising at Adbusters and made her director debut with the ‘uncommercial’ “Obsession Fetish”, parodying Calvin Klein. Founder and creative director of Hello Cool World since 2001, she is most well known for the branding of “The Corporation”, Canada’s top-grossing documentary of all time. She was the mastermind behind the community engagement strategy for the film in four countries. She has an MA from the department of Fine Art & Cultural Studies, University of Leeds, UK, and a BFA in painting from the University of Victoria. She has gone on to collaboratively direct all of Hello Cool World’s recent multi-media projects. She will be directing the digital media component of the upcoming sequel to The Corporation.

Kat is also frequent public speaker and facilitator. She has given workshops on social marketing, change theories, branding and messaging, as well as culture jamming. In 2007, Kat received a “Woman of Vision” award from Women in Film for her work in interactive media. In 2013 she co-authored the book, Picturing Transformation, Nexw’áyansut (2013, Figure 1 Publishing). She was recently profiled for her role as an impact producer in a new book called Story, Money, Impact: Funding Media for Social Change by Tracey Friesen (2016, Routledge).

Kat, with Jada, co-founded the initiative “Drawing Wisdom” a venue for creative decolonizing strategies through film, campaigns, workshops and teaching resources, including the just released short film for VACPC “Na’tsa’mat, a healing journey” and the upcoming training resource for Early Childhood educators in Vancouver designed to educate about the history of residential schools.
